Escambia Academy is inching closer to the AISA state playoffs after securing a 30-8 victory over the Wilcox Academy Wildcats last Friday night, which was their first win of the season on the road.
The Cougars (4-2, 2-1) now set their sights on the Marengo Academy Longhorns (3-3, 2-2), who are in AISA Class 3A.
Cougars head coach Heath Gibson said last week’s win led him to speak with his team about their season goals.
A win would help the Cougars all, but lock up a spot in the playoffs, which would be a huge step for the young team.
The focus for the Cougars this week is learning how to win the first half and put an opponent away.
Gibson said to be a really good, complete football team the Cougars have to finish off opponents.
Gibson said the Longhorns bring a running attack that will test the Cougars. He added that depth will be key if the Cougars want to win.
Offensively, the Cougars will continue to pound the ball out on the ground, but some additions have been made to their gameplan.
Gibson said the pigskin will fly through the air a little more than usual.
The Cougars and Longhorns kick off Friday at 7 p.m. at Bachelor Field in Canoe.
