An early offensive assault by the Monroe Academy Volunteers proved to be too much for the Cougars of Canoe to handle as Escambia Academy was beaten 32-24 Friday night in Monroeville.
The Cougars (6-4, 5-2) started the game sluggish and were unable to capitalize early as the Volunteers jumped out to a 22-0 lead.
Late in the second quarter the Cougars were able to punch in two scores as they ran the ball into the end zone and kicked a field goal to go into halftime down 22-9.
In the second half, the Cougars showed that they do play better in the second part of a game by outscoring the Volunteers 15-10 in the third and fourth quarters to pull within eight points of their rival.
With the final buzzer and the Cougars defeated 32-24 they remain in the No. 3 seed for the AISA playoffs.
Next week, the Cougars travel north to take on Bessemer Academy. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
