EA crushes Saints

Escambia Academy’s Lady Cougars brought the hammer down on the Central Christian Lady Saints in a 51-39 victory Thursday in Robertsdale.
The Lady Cougars (6-1, 0-0) picked up the win with big nights from junior forward Amber Huskey and senior center Jordan Jaye.
Huskey led the team with 24 points, while pulling down nine rebounds, stealing eight passes, dishing out two assists and blocking a shot. Huskey also shot 4-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Jaye recorded a double-double putting up 16 points to go with 10 rebounds, four steals, two blocks and one assist.
It was a rough night offensively for the Lady Cougars as they shot under 20 perecent from the floor and 8-for-17 at the free throw line.
Lady Cougars Head Coach Heath Gibson said the team had trouble all night shooting, and added defensive pressure allowed his team to get the win.
In the first quarter, the Lady Cougars jumped out to a quick lead putting up 12 points and pressuring their opponents into only six points.
That lead grew in the second quarter as the Academy added 17 points to the scoreboard, while only allowing nine for the Lady Saints. At halftime, the Lady Cougars had a comfortable 29-15 lead.
The second half proved to be slightly tougher for the Lady Cougars as the Lady Saints came into the third quarter with a sense of urgency, but defense proved to be key as they stopped Central Christian from making any runs.
The Lady Saints outscored the Lady Cougars 9-8 in the third quarter, and led the fourth period 17-16, which did not do much to dent the Academy’s lead at the final buzzer to give the Lady Cougars their seixth win.
Lady Cougars that recorded stats included junior guard Taylor Helton who scored six points, while recording eight rebounds, four steals, three assists and one block; junior guard Kristin Matthews who scored two points with three rebounds, two assists and two steals and junior guard Rachel Fuller recording two points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist.
The Lady Cougars next game is Saturday, Dec. 19 at Rocky Bayou Christian School in Niceville, Fla.

The Lady Cougars of Canoe needed overtime to secure a victory over the Patrician Lady Saints Tuesday night as they overcame a 12-point deficit to pick up a 66-56 victory.
The Lady Cougars were led by senior center Jordan Jaye, junior forward Amber Huskey and junior guard Taylor Helton.
Huskey and Helton led the team by posting double-doubles. Huskey led the team with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also recorded eight steals and a blocked shot in the win.
Helton added 16 points, while recording 10 rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists.
Jaye also scored 14 points with eight rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist.
Lady Cougars Head Coach Heath Gibson said his team put out a strong effort in the win.
Patrician had a heads up on the Lady Cougars to begin the game as they jumped out to a 12-8 lead.
They added to their lead in the second period this time scoring 17 points with the Lady Cougars only responding with nine. At halftime, the Lady Saints led 29-17.
The Lady Cougars kept the deficit at 12 in the third period coming out and fighting the Lady Saints to a 16-16 tie.
The fight that never stopped in the Lady Cougars came out in the fourth period as they chopped away at Patrician’s lead scoring 21 points and holding the Lady Saints to nine, which sent the game into overtime tied at 54.
In overtime, the Lady Cougars finished the job outscoring Patrician 12-2 to pick up a huge 66-56 victory.
Lady Cougars that helped in the win included senior guard Kay Leigh Miller with eight points, four steals, four assists and three rebounds and junior guard Kristin Matthews who scored eight points, while recording three assists, two rebounds and two steals.
