Escambia County Commissioners took a step to help cover expenses of road and bridge repairs and replacements in anticipation of funding through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
County Commission Chairman David Stokes asked commissioners to authorize himself and County Administrator Tony Sanks to enter into an agreement for a loan or line of credit to fund the purchase of equipment in anticipation of funds expected from FEMA awards.
Commissioner Larry White said the asset purchase would be a wise one for the county.
Stokes said the purchase of the equipment has come at an opportune time for the county.
Stokes said as much as 50 percent of the cost of the equipment could be recouped through the FEMA funding expected for the county.
A loan or line of credit for the equipment purchase will be secured through BankTrust of Brewton according to Stokes.
County Engineer Bill Bridges said several projects are on the board for repair and replacement after being damaged in the December 2009 floods.
Bridges said projects, including work on the Panther Creek Bridge, will take a period of time to complete.
Commissioners also approved a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency to the tune of more than $2,000.
Sanks said a cost sharing agreement with AEMA will bring an additional $2,483 into the county to help with operational expenses of the Escambia County Emergency Management Agency.
Stokes said the state funding is in addition to federal funds also provided for operational expenses of the local agency.
