Despite the loss of five starters, the Escambia County Lady Blue Devils softball team and their caoch are optimistic about the 2010 season.
The Lady Blue Devils have begun to get ready for the season guided by William Casaday and Robert Wilkerson.
Lady Blue Devils Head Coach William Casaday said he sees good things with his returning starters and players who saw action.
With practices ongoing, the Lady Blue Devils are working on pitching, fielding and hitting to prepare for their first game on Feb. 16 against the Northview Lady Chiefs in Atmore.
The team has yet to see a full practice due to the number of girls playing basketball.
Casaday said although he has not had his full squad on the field, he is happy with what he has seen.
One of the stronger aspects of this year’s team looks to be pitching. Michaela Norman is in the spot of the No. 1 pitcher with Maneka Smith also getting action on the mound.
Casaday said that pitching should give his team a leg up in their area.
Defensively, the Lady Blue Devils are getting set at infield and outfield positions.
Casaday said he has an idea where he wants his girls to play except in one area.
Offensively, the Lady Blue Devils will play to their speed instead of power this year.
Casaday said baserunning will be the strength of the 2010 squad.
In terms of their area, Casaday said he thinks his team could compete for first place.
