The Lady Cougars of Escambia Academy have begun softball practices to prepare for their season opener at home against the Southern Academy Lady Cougars on Feb. 23.
The Lady Cougars are in a rebuilding process, but their coach still sees the possibility for the playoffs and a state championship.
Lady Cougars Head Coach Ronnie Huskey said the Lady Cougars are young, but have potential.
The only problem facing the Lady Cougars at this point is having the entire team at practice.
Huskey said basketball season is winding down, but the girls on the team are still playing in the playoffs.
Strengths seem to be spread between the offense and defense for the Lady Cougars.
Huskey said that he sees good things from a batting standpoint and a defensive angle.
Positions on the team are still being determined, but Huskey sees each player at multiple positions.
Huskey said he wants all of his players to be able to play more than one spot on the field.
The goal for the Lady Cougars is to win a state championship.
Huskey said getting to a championship is a game-by-game process.
We want to win a state championship,” he said. “Our first game is a region game, so that will be important and then we focus on one game at a time.”
The Lady Cougars open their season against Southern on Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. in Canoe.
