There are many things people have done to raise money for the American Cancer Society, but the latest fundraiser took home the bacon, literally.
Thursday, Atmore Community Hospital Respiratory Therapy Director Darren Flott set aside his dislike of pork for the cause as he puckered up to a pig in front of dozens of his coworkers after winning the hospital's "Kiss a Pig" contest.
"Many of you know that I don't eat pork," Flott joked prior to giving his smooch. "On behalf of the many cancer survivors, I am honored today to kiss this pig. I don't have to eat it, I just have to kiss it."
The event raised $1,180 for the hospital's Relay for Life team, which also held an ice cream social following the event.
Despite his hesitation to kiss the pig, Flott was a good sport, giving a speech thanking his supporters.
"First of all I want to thank all of my fans," Flott said. "I want to thank my supporters and the contributors of this cause. I am honored that my popularity has allowed ACH's Relay For Life team to raise such a large sum of money for this great charity."
Flott went onto say he personally knows several individuals that have had to battle cancer adding that he is "proud" of the ACH family for "stepping up to the plate and raising the bar" to help others in the community.
