With just a few yards to spare, Escambia Academy’s Chelsea Ramer was able to pull off the flag of Escambia County’s Cha’Nae Lyles to preserve a 72-66 victory in the powderpuff game put on by Youth Leadership Atmore Thursday at Herbert Barnes Stadium.
Once the clock hit zero though, the real winners became the students at elementary schools around Atmore who will see some new reading books grace their libraries in the future thanks to the funds raised by the game.
It was a high-scoring match up with both sides scoring touchdown after touchdown.
For the Lady Blue Devils, Lyles was their leading player as she constantly zigged and zagged through the Lady Cougars defense scoring several touchdowns in the game.
The Lady Cougars had to battle back from an early 16-0 deficit after Lyles scored two quick touchdowns in the first quarter.
Once the Academy did get back into the game the score was changing constantly.
The battle to halftime was entertainig for the crowd as they Lady Blue Devils were able to take lead into the break 46-34.
The Lady Cougars opened the second half with a touchdown run and followed it up with an intereception returned for a touchdown by Grayson Emmons to put them on top 50-46.
Again the game turned into a touchdown bonanza as the teams continued to trade scores all the way up until the .08 second mark.
The Lady Cougars were able to take the lead 72-66 with eight seconds left.
That’s when the foot race for the endzone began with Ramer catching Lyles a few yards from the goalline to help her team win the game.
