With the Escambia Academy junior varsity track teams fresh off state championships, the Cougars varsity track team will look to accomplish the same feat Wednesday and Thursday in Selma.
With the latter still up in the air, it still remains that the Cougars’ track program remains strong despite the loss of its strongest runner in Alan Ash.
Cougars Head Coach Heath Gibson said that the school’s track teams have a heads up on other school’s for one reason.
The varsity boys track team is going for its fourth consecutive state championship, while the Lady Cougars look to earn their one as well.
Gibson said a competitive streak and the want to win is one of the reasons that they continue to win championships.
Another thing that helps the Cougars’ track athletes is the fact that several of them are multisport athletes.
Gibson said with students playing more than one sport during the spring, it helps keep them conditioned and the team is able to focus on other aspects of their training.
Gibson and the Cougars hope their hard work and dedication pays off this year.
Gibson said he hopes his team wins more than the Class 2A state championship.
