AFD responds to fire, chemical spill at Masland Carpets

Personnel with the Atmore Fire Department responded to a fire at Masland Carpets just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to personnel at the scene, the fire was quickly extinguished, but the hazardous materials unit with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians Fire Department was called to the scene on Carpet Drive to assist with the cleanup of chemicals including inks and dyes, which were contained to the building.

All off-duty and volunteer fire personnel were also put on standby.

All employees were evacuated from the building and later released to go home. At 10:15 p.m., the scene was cleared and the next shift of employees was allowed back inside.
