The Escambia County High School Lady Blue Devils moved to 2-2 on the year after winning one game and losing two in a tournament Saturday in Thomasville.
ECHS split with defending 2A state runner-up Leroy and lost to Jackson.
The Lady Devils beat Leroy 5-1 in their first game Saturday. ECHS scored four runs in the first inning with back-to-back doubles by Tristan Booth and Jasmine Ireland.
“We led the game off with back-to-back doubles,” said coach Daryl Otwell.
The team then drew a couple walks, which allowed Ynetta Craft to get an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Seairra Bullin then hit a groundball to second base for an RBI.
Ireland scored in the fifth inning on a double by Kaylee Cox.
Cox went six innings, gave up two hits and walked one in the win.
“She did an excellent job pitching in the game,” Otwell said.
The ECHS bats got quiet in the next game, losing to Jackson 3-1.
Cox pitched five innings, gave up two earned runs and struck out four.
The Lady Blue Devils just couldn’t find answers to Jackson’s pitching, Otwell said.
“Their pitcher was hitting her spots and kept us off balance,” Otwell said. “It was a pitching duel and we just came up short.”
Booth went 1-for-3 in the loss with a double. Cox went 1-for-3 from the plate.
ECHS lost 10-0 to Leroy in the elimination round of the tournament Saturday. The Lady Bears scored six runs in the first inning.
“Our bats struggled and we couldn’t come back after that,” Otwell said.
Cox threw three innings and Taylor Hill pitched two. Cox also went 1-for-2 from the plate in the loss.
The Lady Blue Devils will play in the T.R. Miller Invitational Tournament in Brewton Friday.
The Lady Blue Devils open up play against the tournament hosting Lady Tigers at 4:30 p.m.
