Atmore 8Us finish 2nd in district tourney

Jay, Fla.’s 8U Cal Ripken All-Stars beat Atmore 13-3 in the District 7 championship Sunday afternoon at Tom Byrne Park.
The Florida team took a 3-2 lead in the second inning and tacked on five more runs in the third to pull away for good. In the fourth, Jay added four runs to go up by 10.
Atmore didn’t get the hits it needed during the loss.
On Saturday, Atmore lost 10-9 to Jay in the winner’s bracket semifinals, but came back to beat Monroe 18-3 to stay alive in the tournament.
In the first round, Atmore beat Monroe, 12-2 in a slugfest.
Jay 13, Atmore 3
Gabe Hooks went 1-for-2; Jaylen Taylor went 1-for-1 with a triple; K.J. Taylor went 1-for-1 with a single; Cali McCants went 1-for-1; and Zy Martin went 1-for-1 with a run to lead Atmore.
Marcantel, Fretwell, Nicholas Baxley, Mathis, Pipkin and Patrick had two hits each for Jay. First names weren’t available as of press time Monday.
Atmore 18, Monroe 3
Atmore scored five runs each in the first and second innings, and tacked on eight in the fourth.
Monroe scored two in the first and one in the fourth.
Ronta Watson, Jamarrion Robinson, Gabe Hooks and Martin had two hits each. Taylor had three hits to lead Atmore.
Jay 10, Atmore 9
Deandre Hooks went 2-for-2 with two runs and a home run to lead Atmore. Watson and Robinson went 2-for-3 each.
Taylor went 1-for-3 with a home run; Hooks went 2-for-2; K.J. Taylor went 2-for-2; and Hayden Caley went 2-for-2.
