Two cars crashed head-on early Thursday morning just past the Brushy Creek Bridge near Holman Prison on Hwy. 21 north.
The two vehicles, one a Chevrolet Impala and the other a Dodge Avenger, collided around 6 a.m. Bystanders at the scene of the accident stated that one car appeared to veer into the other's lane prior to impact.
Life Flight was dispatched to the accident scene to transport both drivers. It took more than an hour to free the driver of the Avenger, so a second helicopter was dispatched to the scene. Emergency personnel established a landing area for both helicopters at the Rivercane site just off Interstate 65.
The identities of the drivers has not been released, but according to rescue personnel the driver of the Avenger was a employee of Holman Prison and the driver of the Impala and his passenger, who was transported to Atmore Community Hospital, were employees of Pepsi Cola Bottling of Atmore.
The Poarch police and fire departments, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, the Atmore Fire Department, McCullough Volunteer Fire Department, Atmore Ambulance and the Alabama State Troopers Office responded to the accident. David's Paint &Body towed the vehicles.
