As football season begins to wind down, basketballs are being brought out of the storage closet and nets are being hooked back to the rim.
Escambia Academy’s Lady Cougars have already begun practicing and have just completed their second week of workouts.
Lady Cougars Head Coach Heath Gibson said the girls have been coming to practice with a strong work ethic.
The struggle in practice for the Lady Cougars squad is their conditioning drill, which is called ‘The Gauntlet’ that consists of several drills over a specific time limit that the girls have to meet.
Gibson said they have been running through the drill every day.
Things do look promising for the Lady Cougars as they return seven players from last year’s squad and picked up a former player that transferred back into the Academy.
Gibson said the advantage for the Cougars will be their size down in the post.
The inside presence for the Cougars will be filled by senior Jordan Jaye and juniors Amber Huskey and Taylor Helton.
Gibson said Jaye and Huskey will be the strongest post players with Helton adding in her ball handling.
Point guard is a position that will be filled by a senior, while shooting guard is still up for grabs.
Gibson said Kay Leigh Miller will run the floor for the Lady Cougars, and added that the need for his team is a sure shooter.
As the tip off for the Lady Cougars draws closer, Gibson said he sees good things for this year’s team.
