A group of 37 young members of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians are preparing to wow the crowd at the Tribe’s 39th annual Thanksgiving Pow Wow.
Alex Alvarez, founder and manager of the group, said the teens have been preparing for the event since July.
Alvarez said one of the main reasons for the group being formed was to teach a dying language and culture.
The group meets weekly for a variety of activities including practice for the Pow Wow, Alvarez said.
On Pow Wow day, the group will perform with many of the dancers taking to the mound for the first time, Alvarez said.
In the three years since the founding of the group, Alvarez said many of the dancers who made up the initial group have advanced in their abilities and have become awarded dancers.
The group does more than dance at the Pow Wow in Poarch each year, Alvarez said.
The group performed for an audience in Anniston last week and recently performed for residents at Century Care Center and for an audience at the Century Library.
Alvarez said traveling performances can be hectic, but it allows dancers to practice and become more comfortable on Pow Wow day.
The Pow Wow Club will perform at the annual event on Thursday, Nov. 26. Gates open at the Tribal grounds for the Pow Wow at 10 a.m.
