Escambia Academy’s football season may have ended sooner than they had hoped, but they have added a little more history to their story with two of their most talented players being selected to play in the 2009 AISA All-Star game in Prattville on Thursday, Dec. 1
Seniors Jon Dean and Cameron “Cowboy” McGhee were selected to play for the West team during the annual postseason game.
Cougars Head Coach Heath Gibson, who will be assisting with the West team, said Dean and McGhee were two of the first players chosen in the selection process.
Dean and McGhee led the Cougars as they rebounded from 0-11 in 2008 to 7-6 and the semifinals of the playoffs in 2009.
Dean, a wingback for the Cougars, said the honor of being chosen feels good because of the amount of athletes that have the potential to make it.
For McGhee, being chosen means people see beyond his small stature for a fullback and linebacker into something else he has.
To make it to the All-Star game both players had to work hard in practice and school to make sure they could compete.
McGhee said he worked hard everyday to make sure he was at his best when the games were played.
For Dean it is a goal he has wanted to achieve since his freshman season at the Academy.
Dean and McGhee play in the All-Star game on Thursday, Dec. 3 in Prattville.
