The year 2009 was one for the record books as the Wind Creek Casino &Hotel opened its doors to gamers, Atmore authorities sought an apartment murder suspect, a Canoe man held up tellers at First National Bank &Trust, the economy forced many businesses to close and record floods caused damage countywide.
The City of Atmore saw two businesses open in Rivercane, its 643-acre commercial development off Interstate 65. Holiday Inn Express and Hardee’s opened their doors to customers as several new businesses showed interest in building until economic woes hit.
Once again, Escambia County and the Gulf Coast dodged a hurricane despite predictions of a strong season, but saw heavy rains year round.
The city also lost many people who served the Atmore community and their country.
These are just a few of the many events from the year that affected Atmore and its surrounding communities. Below is a month-by-month roundup of the top events from 2009 in and around Atmore.
