A 34-year-old woman is listed in serious but stable condition after a wreck in Cantonment last Wednesday.
Kimberly Mary Cannon, of 2291 Britt Road, Cantonment, was transported to West Florida ER after the 2001 Ford Taurus she was a passenger in skidded off Highway 97 and landed on its roof. She is currently awake and alert as she continues to recover from the accident.
Other passengers in the car, Christopher Lee Cannon, 27, and Jaden Skye Morris, 4, also of 2291 Britt Road, suffered minor injuries and were treated and released.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, was driving the 4-door Taurus traveling north on Hwy. 97 when he entered a curve, ran off the right side of the roadway and crossed both lanes of roadway into the shoulder.
According to Chris Cannon, after the car entered the left side shoulder it rotated counter-clockwise and flipped twice, landing on it's roof.
FHP reports state that Mr. Cannon ran off the road when attempting to take a curve and overcompensated causing the vehicle to jump the two lane road and land in the opposing shoulder.
According to Cannon, the drivers side airbag went off, while the passenger side airbag did not. Cannon said all passengers were wearing there seat belt, but the FHP reports Mrs. Cannon was not.
Mr. Cannon was thrown from the drivers seat through the back window.
Mrs. Cannon suffered severe lacerations on her legs and arms, while Mr. Cannon received only a small cut on the top of his hand. Morris received a "bump" on his forehead, according to Cannon and was released from Sacred Heart Hospital.
LT. Tommy Moore said no charges were pending in the case, but the driver was given citations for failure to use due care and driving too fast for conditions, pursuant to Title XXIII 316.185 of Florida Uniform Traffic Control.
The law states that even "if the speed of a vehicle is lower than the prescribed limits," it does not necessarily "relieve the driver from the duty to decrease speed when approaching and going around a curve, or when special hazards exist or may exist with respect to weather or other roadway conditions."
According to Moore, the road was wet and the speed of the vehicle caused Cannon to unsuccessfully take the curve.
"Apparently the speed of the vehicle was not such that the driver could safely negotiate the curve," Moore said.
FHP says that no investigation is pending.
