Jack Springs Road should be getting a facelift soon.
Monday, the county commission announced that $431,400 of federal funding has been made available for a project to resurface County Road 1 from the Atmore city limits to Jack Springs Community near McCullough north of I-65.
"This is a big project," said Commission Chairman Larry White.
Plans for the project are already complete, said Bill Bridges, assistant county engineer. "We've done everything the county can do. As soon as the funding is available, the county will start work," Bridges said. The money will become available when Congress passes an appropriations bill for the next fiscal year.
Approximately 9.4 miles of road will be levelled and resurfaced. The project should take about a month once the county is able to begin construction.
A letter about the funds from the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to the commission praises the commission and Representative Greg Albritton for bringing the need for the project to light.
This is the second project for C.R. 1, also known as Jack Springs Road. Earlier this year, a bridge over Brushy Creek was replaced, paid for by state GARVEE bond money.
The bridge will allow heavier trucks to traverse over the creek on Jack Springs Road.
Also, the city is planning to build a new access road connecting the city's industrial park on Highway 31 to Jack Springs Road. The road will provide better access for the tenants, including Masland Carpets.
