Drugs smuggled into county jail

An Atmore man has been arrested for smuggling contraband into the Escambia County Detention Center after making a drop off of drugs to inmates house there.
John Lee Davis III, 20, of 1192 Martinville Road in Atmore was arrested on Aug. 14 after security cameras revealed that he had jumped the fence surrounding the jail to make the drop, Maj. Mike Murphy with the Escambia County Sheriff's office said.
"At 10 p.m. on Aug. 14, correctional officers monitoring security cameras noticed a white male jump the jail perimeter fence on St. Nicholas Ave.," Murphy said. "The person caught on camera, placed items into a drop bag that was lowered by inmates through a busted window in Unit 4."
Murphy said that correctional officers immediately entered the unit in question while deputies chased the violator as he jumped back over the fence.
Items seized by correctional officers included a single methadone pill, ecstasy pills, smoking tobacco with rolling papers, cigars, and blunt cigars, Murphy said.
"Blunt cigars are cigars that are laced with marijuana," Murphy said.
Davis was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, promoting prison contraband – second degree, possession of marijuana -first degree, and criminal trespass – first degree, Murphy said.
"He remains in the Escambia County Detention Center on a $15,000 bond," Murphy said. "He was additionally arrested today for Violation of Probation."
The case remains under investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.
"Davis was dropped off by another person in a vehicle in connection with the violation," Murphy said. "Future charges are possibly pending for his accomplice in the case."
