A Birmingham woman was killed Thursday afternoon six miles north of the Atmore exit following a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 65.
According to a report issued by the Alabama Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Division, Vandalyn L. Chaplin, 87, died from injuries sustained during the roller over crash.
"The vehicle was in the inside lane traveling south and it appears the driver left the roadway and over corrected to the right, crossed over both southbound lanes, hit an embankment and rolled two or three times," Alabama State Trooper Jimmy Dean, who investigated the accident, said Friday afternoon.
The driver of the vehicle, a 1998 Mercury Sable, was 86-year-old Elouise P. Rafferty, also of Birmingham. She was transported to USA Hospital in Mobile.
Dean said the accident is still under investigation and that the traffic homicide division will also conduct an investigation because the passenger of the vehicle was killed.
"I will assist traffic homicide with their investigation," Dean said. "Any time there's a fatality, they are going to be contacted.
Dean doesn't suspect any foul play, but said the investigations are mandatory.
"There was nothing suspicious or out of the ordinary, it was just an unfortunate action," Dean said.
The vehicle was towed to David's Paint and Body in Atmore.
