Trailers and RVs rolled into Atmore Thursday and rolled out Sunday after the final race of the Gulf Coast MX Championship was over. The Atmore Motocross Park hosted the sixth and final round of the first ever championship.
Trophies were given to the top three riders in each of the 20 classes of motocross or quad vehicles. Track owner Bobby Hadley said the weekend was full of excitement and good racing.
The weekend saw more than 200 riders participate in the final round of the points series. Track promoter Steve Hicks said the weekend went well.
"Thousands of spectators from Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana were on hand to witness the races and awards presentation," Hicks said. "The series was a success. It was the first of its kind in south Alabama in two decades in the sport of motocross. Other tracks and promoters from the Southeast, and more national major sponsors have expressed interest in joining the series in 2007."
Hicks said the series could not have gone as smoothly as it did without the help of the many national and local sponsors.
"We now have four national title sponsors in line," he said. "They are Parts Unlimited, THOR, Western Powersports and Fly Racing. It has been a great time for the local motorcycle shops as well from Kenny's in Brewton to all the shops in Mobile and Pensacola and local sponsors such as Atmore's Jim Johnson Ford."
The next scheduled race on the track is Dec. 2-3.
