A Monroe County man was seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday around 4:15 p.m. on Sardine Road.
Bystanders said that nobody actually witnessed the wreck, but that the first people who were on the scene were hunters. According to those bystanders, the hunters attempted to get the injured man out of his vehicle using a crowbar, but were unsuccessful.
The Atmore Fire &Rescue Department, the Flomaton Fire Department, an officer with the Alabama State Troopers Office and Kelley's Ambulance Service were all called to the scene of the accident. Upon arrival, rescue personnel were also unable to free the victim and had to use the Jaws of Life to get the injured man out of his vehicle.
After the driver of the SUV was pulled out of his vehicle, witnesses at the scene overheard the driver stating that he ran off the road because he was trying to "light a cigarette". The Chevrolet SUV he was driving apparently left the roadway and flipped at least once on its roof.
The same witnesses stated that although he was talking, he was starting to "go in and out of consciousness."
The name of the driver and other accident records were not available at press time.
