A fire took control of a home on 4th Street Wednesday afternoon, scorching a bed and causing smoke damage to the entire home.
Clemmie Brown is the owner of the residence that was attacked by fire and smoke Wednesday around 5 p.m.
Atmore Fire and Rescue Department chief Gerry McGhee said his department received the call at 5:04 p.m. and stayed for more than an hour.
"When we got there the fire was in the back bedroom," he said. "It looked like the bed was on fire. It was consumed to that bedroom. The rest of the house had smoke damage."
The Atmore Fire and Rescue Department had five units at the location of the fire and was the only department to respond to the call.
McGhee said the fire was contained to one bedroom but the rest of the house had smoke damage. When his department arrived to Brown's home, the bed was destroyed by the fire.
The source of the fire was unknown, but McGhee said it looked as if the fire started because of a heater.
"The bed was on fire," McGhee said. "It looked like the fire started from the heater beside the wall. The bed was more burnt than anything."
According to McGhee, 14 firemen including volunteers responded to the scene. They were on the scene until 6:29 p.m.
