Gangs of ghosts and goblins will take over the streets of Atmore later this month to solicit residents for candy and other treats.
During Monday afternoon's Atmore city council meeting, mayor Howard Shell announced that the city would observe Halloween on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
"We talked to the director of public safety and some of the other officials and we're going to ask that they observe Halloween on the 31st," mayor Howard Shell said.
Trick or treating times throughout Atmore are 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
"This will allow youngsters ample time to make their calls and get them off the streets before it gets too dark for them to safely be on the streets," Shell said.
Assigning hours to trick or treating also prevents any practical jokes or pranks from occurring later in the evening, according to public safety director Glenn Carlee.
"During the late night hours we have more of the mischievous acts go on and we would like to get them off the streets as early as possible," he said. "We would also like to remind all the parents to have their children wear bright, color reflective clothing, carry a flashlight with them and to inspect all their treats when they get home before they consume it. Over the years, we've only had minimal problems on Halloween night. All of the residents are out of candy by then."
