The nation honors the birth date of the late Martin Luther King Jr. on the third Monday of January every year and with that celebration comes parades, food and most importantly, remembrance.
This year’s MLK Day is celebrated on Jan. 21 and the Concerned Citizens of Atmore are doing their part to make sure Atmore residents remember what King stood for with a unity prayer breakfast, parade and a program. Concerned Citizen Sandra Gray said plans for MLK Day are going well and that the organization hopes everyone will have fun, but also will remember what the holiday is all about.
The MLK Parade and Holiday Celebration will be held Jan. 21. The parade lineup will begin at 9 a.m. at Houston Avery Park located on Martin Luther King Avenue. The parade will leave the park at 10 a.m. and will end at Deliverance Ministry of Jesus Christ, located at 103 2nd Ave., where a program and free dinner will be held.
All parade applications must be turned in by tomorrow and every entry has to pertain to Martin Luther King Jr. Gray said for an application, visit the Unity House or call a Concerned Citizen.
Gray said she feels the parade will be a success this year.
The Concerned Citizens’ annual unity prayer breakfast will be held at Atmore Community Hospital Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Gray said this will make the sixth year the group has hosted the breakfast for MLK Day. Entertainment at the breakfast will include several local soloists and school board member Danny Benjamin as the keynote speaker. Also the MLK queen will be crowned.
Individuals who would like to attend the breakfast can buy tickets in advance or can purchase them at the door. Tickets are $10 apiece.
