Tough stretch for Academy

The Marengo Academy Lady Longhorns were a little too much for the Escambia Academy Lady Cougars to handle Tuesday in Linden. Marengo won 10-0 in five innings.
Marengo scored two runs in the first inning, six in the second inning, one in the fourth and one in the fifth for the win.
Payne had high praise for the Lady Longhorns.
Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Morris (3-7) took the loss for the 3-8 Lady Cougars. She allowed 10 runs, five earned, on eight hits, struck out five and walked three.
Freshman center fielder Taylor Helton was 1-for-3 with one double and junior shortstop Malori McGhee was 1-for-2.

The Lady Cougars cut down the errors and Morris threw a no-hitter as EA won 12-1 over Evangel Christian Academy March 10.
Morris allowed one unearned run on zero hits, struck out seven batters and walked one for the win.
McGhee, Morris and Helton each went 1-for-4 at the plate. McGhee had one home run, two RBIs, two runs scored, one stolen base and one walk. Helton had two runs scored and one stolen base. Morris had four runs scored, three stolen bases, one RBI and one walk.
Freshman third baseman Tori Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBIs, two walks and one run scored. Freshman Amber Huskey went 1-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and one walk.
Junior Katie Mothershed was 1-for-1 with one stolen base.

In the second game of a doubleheader with Monroe Academy March 8, the Lady Cougars could not sit back against the Lady Volunteers’ pitcher and lost 5-0.
Morris took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs, one earned, on seven hits. She struck out six and walked one. She was also 1-for-3 at the plate with a double.

In the first game of the doubleheader last Saturday, EA went up 5-0 after two innings, but could not keep the momentum up, losing 10-5.
The Lady Cougars scored two runs in the first inning and three in the second, but could not put another run across the board. Monroe cut the lead to 5-2 with two runs in the fourth inning and grabbed an 8-5 lead with six runs in the fifth. They added two runs in the sixth for insurance and the 10-5 final score.
Morris allowed 10 runs, four earned, on seven hits in the loss. She struck out seven and walked four. She also led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one double, one RBI and one stolen base.
Helton was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. McGhee went 2-for-4 with one run scored and Huskey went 1-for-2.
The Lady Cougars faced Cottage Hill at home Thursday and the results will be in an upcoming Advance. Up next is a game on the road against Monroe. Tomorrow at 5 p.m.
