The Flomaton Police Department is searching for an Atmore man who fled the scene of a single vehicle accident Monday afternoon on Old Atmore Road.

FPD detective Matt Jernigan said Steven Michael Campbell, Jr., 38, was identified by an eyewitness to the crash using a photo lineup and was also placed in the vehicle at the time of the accident by his girlfriend.

The accident took place Monday afternoon when Campbell flipped the Jeep Grand Cherokee he was driving and then fled the scene on foot.

Campbell was traveling south on Old Atmore Road at an apparent high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and apparently overcorrected, causing the jeep to flip at least five times, according to officials. He then exited his vehicle and began to wander around the wreck site. Two nearby residents, who attempted to aid Campbell, said he had a large gash on his forehead and was bleeding profusely. The residents said the he “all of the sudden bolted” and began running across the road and through a field, all without saying a single word.

A K-9 team from Fountain Prison was called in but eventually lost Campbell’s scent at a location where is thought to have circled back around to Old Atmore Road.

A Lifeflight helicopter also aided in the search. Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies, Flomaton police officers and Flomaton firefighters responded to the scene.

Jernigan said a misdemeanor warrant has been issued for Campbell for leaving the scene of an accident without injuries. Atmore Police Chief Jason Dean said Campbell frequents the Atmore area, but was not sure if he is actually a resident.
