Atmore drivers: slow down

Drivers along East and West Sunset drives and Madison Avenue in the Atmore area will have to slow down after members of the Escambia County Commission agreed to post slower speed limits along those routes.
Commissioner Wiley Tait, who serves the district in which the roadways are situated, explained the reason behind the requested changes.
Bill Bridges, county engineer, said a group of citizens in the McCullough area had also requested speed limits be posted in their area.
Bridges said he would agree the reduced speed limits along both Sunset drives and Madison Avenue are warranted.
After some additional discussion, commissioners agreed to have the speed limit reduced from 35 to 30 miles per hour along Sunset Drive and at 25 miles per hour on Madison Avenue.
The commission also ratified an emergency declaration in regard to the Perdido River Bridge along Railroad Street near Perdido.
After commissioners ratified the declaration, Bridges explained work to replace the bridge would begin as soon as possible.
The cost of the project should be approximately $100,000, Bridges said.

The cost of the audit, an estimated $2,000 to $3,000, will come from the Community Corrections budget.
