Eight "Category A" bridges are on Escambia County's list to be replaced with work funded by $3.2 million which the Escambia County Commission members voted to accept at Monday morning's regular meeting.
The eight "Category A" bridges are among 16 bridges to be replaced within Escambia County.
An act was passed by the state legislature to replace structurally deficient bridges which meet or exceed certain traffic counts. The bridges to be replaced must meet certain guidelines set up by the state legislature and are not bridges chosen to be replaced or repaired by county officials nor the state Department of Transportation.
The list of "Category A" bridges in Escambia County include:
Narrow Gap Creek, located a half-mile west of Foshee on County Road 18;
Amos Mill Creek, located four miles north of Teddy on County Road 43;
Little Juniper Creek, located three-fourths of a mile west of Brewton on County Road 49;
Jernigan Creek, located seven-tenths of a mile north of Pollard on Old Highway 31;
Brushy Creek Branch, located one mile northwest of Atmore on Smith Dairy Road;
Chavers Creek, located five miles north of Pollard on County Road 18;
Brushy Creek, located in the northwest corner of the Atmore city limits on County Road 1 and
Boler Mill Creek, located one mile south of Teddy on County Road 43.
The county commissioners also approved a resolution authorizing County Engineer John Downing to hire a consultant for assistance with bridge projects.
Hiring a consultant will also save the county money because an independent firm can do the work at a lower cost.
The county commissioners voted in favor of a resolution authorizing the replacement of the "Category A" bridges and the hiring of a consultant by the county engineer.
