Statewide Republican candidates Twinkle Cavanaugh, Beth Kellum and Mary Windom made their 18th stop of the Hometown Connection 67-county bus tour in Atmore Wednesday.
The tour, which started Sept. 22 and lasts until Oct. 22, has candidates traveling throughout the state and stopping in small towns to meet citizens and encourage them to voice concerns and discuss issues.
The candidates spoke with attendees as they walked in, and after state representative Alan Baker introduced them, each gave a short speech and answered audience questions.
Cavanaugh, who is running for President of the Public Service Commission, said they are trying to connect with the people and ask for their vote.
Beth Kellum, a Court of Criminal Appeals candidate, seconded the importance of candidates getting out and asking for votes.
This small town commitment has the three candidates, plus candidates Judge Greg Shaw and Judge Bill Thompson who were unable to attend that day, making more than 100 stops in their month on the road.
The candidates, who are all running for statewide office, stressed the importance of small town citizens.
Atmore resident Robert Maxwell attended the tour stop and said he thought it went well. “In a democracy such as we are blessed to have, I think that every citizen has an obligation to be informed about the issues and about the candidates running for public office,” Maxwell said. “For that reason, I appreciate that these candidates have come to Atmore to speak and present themselves to local folks.”
